LM Studio ships Bionic: agent app for open models on Mac and Windows

▼ WHAT HAPPENED

LM Studio released Bionic on 2026-07-16, a separate Mac/Windows app that runs open models as agents for coding and knowledge work. Code projects attach to a local folder; the agent investigates, edits, and debugs with inline diffs and agentic code search. Work projects handle documents, PDFs, decks, and spreadsheets inside a sandboxed environment, with automatic checkpoints for reviewing or rolling back changes. A system-wide voice keyboard ships with Mistral AI's Voxtral model for fully offline, multilingual dictation. Local models run on the existing LM Studio runtime; heavier tasks can optionally route to LM Studio Secure Cloud, which hosts larger open models (GLM 5.2, Kimi K2.7 Code) under a zero-data-retention policy and requires an account with billing. LM Studio states it does not train on user data. The original LM Studio app remains available alongside Bionic.

▼ OPERATOR ANGLE

If you run models through LM Studio, Bionic layers agent workflows on the same runtime: sandboxed file access, rollback checkpoints, and offline Voxtral dictation, all local by default. The cloud tier is strictly opt-in and billed per account — nothing leaves your hardware unless you enable it. Bionic is a separate install, and the existing LM Studio app keeps working for low-level configuration.
