Mac Studio moves to M5 Max and M5 Ultra: up to 512 GB at 1.2 TB/s
▼ WHAT HAPPENED
Apple made the new Mac mini and Mac Studio available on September 22, 2026. Mac Studio with M5 Max starts at $2,499: an 18-core CPU, a 32-core GPU (40-core optional), 36 GB of unified memory configurable to 48, 64 or 128 GB, and 460 GB/s of memory bandwidth (614 GB/s with the 40-core GPU). Mac Studio with M5 Ultra starts at $5,499: a 30-core CPU and 64-core GPU (36-core and 80-core optional), 96 GB configurable to 256 or 512 GB, and 1.2 TB/s of memory bandwidth. Mac mini with M6 starts at $899 and with M5 Pro at $1,699. Apple never shipped an M4 Ultra; the Mac Studio went from M4 Max and M3 Ultra to M5.
▼ OPERATOR ANGLE
For memory-bound LLM inference, bandwidth and unified memory are the two numbers that matter, and the M5 Ultra raises both over the M3 Ultra's 819 GB/s. If you were waiting on an M4 Ultra, this is its replacement. We have not benchmarked either chip yet, so plan capacity from the memory size and wait for measured tokens per second before deciding on speed.
